Travelling to and around Bulgaria

By aeroplane

There are two airports on the Bulgarian coast, one at Bourgas and the other at Varna. During the summer season (April to October) there is a big increase in cheap charter flights and you can fly to the airports all year round with scheduled flights.

You have a number of options for transfers to your resort. There are always Taxi's available which are quite competatively priced, for example a taxi from Bourgas airport to St Vlas will coast about 50 Leva (18 GBP) and will take about half an hour. More recently specialist transfer companies have started doing business, for Bourgas airport to St Vlas prices look slightly cheaper than taxis but transfer time is probably higher. Also, during the day you can use the public transport which for Bourgas airport is regular and cheap buses. They are local buses which go along all the costal towns and villages so they will be slow.

Bulgaria has three other international airports which service the rest of the country. Sofia is in the west, Plovdiv in the south and Gorna Oryahovitsa in the north. Here is a table which shows you which airports you need for various destinations.

As expected there are a number of car hire options and the companies tend to offer car pick up from airports.
