Pamporovo Guide

Pamporovo is the third largest ski resort in Bulgaria, located to the south east of the country in the Rhodopa Mountains about 260 km (160 mi) from Sofia and 85 km (50 mi) from Plovdiv. The region is known for it's long and relatively mild winters with January temperatures averaging 3 degrees centigrade (37 fahrenheit). The resort, situated at a height of 1650 metres (5400 ft), has up to 150 days of snow and 120 days of sunshine per annum which makes it the ideal place to enjoy winter sports without having to endure the extreme cold.

There are 14 ski runs of varying difficulty from nursary slopes for beginners to black slopes for the experts, in all providing tens of kilometres of downhill skiing. There is also a ski kindergarten to cater for those with young families and, naturally, piste-side bars for when you need a rest. With a mix of chair lifts and drag lifts the resort is able to handle 8500 skiers per hour. Whilst for those that prefer skiing on the flat there are over 30 km (almost 19 miles) of cross country skin runs.

Pamporovo provides all those service you would expect from a modern winter resort, equipment rentals and advice for skiers and boarders alike and a ski school for all levels. Modern hotels offer all the apres-ski facilities from swimming pools, saunas, solarium and fitness centres to discotheques, shopping centres and bars.

Although some way from any large city reaching Pamporovo is not a problem, there are several transfer services available with pick-ups directly from Sofia airport, alternatively the larger hotels in Pamporovo provide a shuttle service or will organise the transfer for you.

If you're not a dawn to dusk skier but are looking for a relaxing sun and snow holiday or if your taking your family then Pamporovo is an ideal choice.

Primarily a winter resort Pamporovo is also pleasant to visit off season, the picturesque surrounding mountains with peaks of up to 2000 metres (6550 ft) make for ideal hiking and mountain biking in the summer.
